Bio
I am currently an Associate Professor of Department of Biomedical Science in Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea. I received my Ph.D. from the Department of Biomedicine at CHA Stem Cell institute, CHA University, Seoul, South Korea in 2011 and worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Stem Cells, Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea for three and half years. I accepted a faculty position as an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Science in 2015, where I have remained thereafter.
My early research focused on the protein modifications, exploring how the ubiquitination and deubiquitination of a stem cell transcription factors influence their stability, enzymatic activity, interactions, localization, or other functions in the maintenance of stem cell pluripotency and differentiation. During my Postdoctoral research, I worked on introducing novel methods to enhance the efficiency and specificity of programmable nucleases such as Zinc Finger Nuclease (ZFN), Transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALEN), RNA-guided engineered nuclease (RGEN) that enable genome editing in cultured cells including human pluripotent stem cells. My current research mainly focuses on signaling pathways that regulate proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and tumorigenesis via the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) using CRISPR/Cas9 system.
The expression level of most proteins in the cell can be regulated by the posttranslational modification (PTM) with the coordinated addition and removal of ubiquitin by a serial reaction of ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes and deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs). We have been studying protein stability, cellular functions, diverse structures, and putative substrates of these enzymes, and we are now trying to identify specific small molecules targeting these enzymes in order to develop novel therapeutic drugs, since it is becoming evident that inhibition of these enzymes can be useful for the treatment of various diseases including metabolic diseases and various cancers. I have published over 100 articles which includes research article, reviews, and book chapters.
