Dr. Sunil Chirayath is the director of NSSPI and also serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University. Dr. Chirayath is an expert in the area of nuclear safety, security and safeguards research and education. He teaches courses on nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear material safeguards, nuclear security and Monte Carlo radiation transport. His research interests include safeguards approaches for nuclear fuel cycle, proliferation resistance quantification and analysis, nuclear forensics, nuclear security insider threat analysis, fast breeder reactor analysis and small modular reactor neutronics coupling with thermal hydraulics. In NSSPI he manages projects funded by USDHS (Domestic Nuclear Detection Office), USDOE (National Nuclear Security Administration and Nuclear Energy), USDOS (Partnership for Nuclear Security) and nuclear utility companies. His research project awards in the U.S. has exceeded $3 million in the past 5 years. Dr. Chirayath advised more than 15 MS and PhD students. Prior to his jobs in NSSPI as postdoctoral research associate and research scientist, he served the Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) in the capacity of Scientific Assistant (1991-1998) and Scientific Officer (1998-2009) with the responsibility for the regulatory review of Indian nuclear fuel cycle facilities. He underwent one year health physics stipendiary training in the Indian Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) during 1990-1991. He earned his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Physics respectively from University of Madras and University of Calicut (India). He has over 150 technical publications in refereed journals (50+) and national/international conference proceedings (100+).
