Bio
Sungeun Chung (Ph.D., University of Maryland, 2004) is Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Sungkyunkwan University. Before joining Sungkyunkwan University, he taught communication for five years at Western Illinois University, IL, USA. He focuses on modeling and testing dynamic belief change during message processing and decision-making. He and Edward Fink at Temple University developed a new mathematical model for sequential information processing, the sequential information integration model (SIIM), and published articles on the model in major communication journals. Recently, he investigates the underestimation and overestimation of the impact of media and persuasive messages. He is also working on models of message discrepancy and source effects, and models of humor effects. He received various awards, including the Randall Harrison Outstanding Article Award from ICA (2020), Distinguished Article Awards from NCA four times (2005, 2010, 2014, 2016), the Outstanding Contribution to Communication Science Award from ICA (2018), the Best Article Award (2014, 2022) from the Korean Society for Journalism and Communication Studies. He also received Top Paper awards from National Communication Association (2007), Korean Association for Broadcasting & Telecommunication Studies (2014), the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (2018), and International Communication Association (2023). In 2014, he received the University Achievement Award from Sungkyunkwan University. His research has been published in the field’s premier journals, including Human Communication Research, Journal of Communication, Communication Monographs, Communication Research, Communication Theory, and Media Psychology. His research has been presented at conferences not only in communication but also in psychology and political science. He is now vice president of the Korean Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (KSJCS) and Editor-in-Chief of Asian Communication Research, which is the official international journal of KSJCS. He served as an editorial board member of Health Communication and an ad hoc reviewer for major communication journals such as Journal of Communication, Human Communication Research, Communication Monographs, Communication Research, and Communication Theory. He also served as a member of editorial boards for three major Korean communication journals. During his Sabbatical in 2017 at Temple University, he was invited and presented his research in seven universities in USA (Indiana Univ., Univ. of Georgia, Penn State Univ., Univ. of Oklahoma, Michigan State Univ., Temple Univ., and Univ. of Maryland). He teaches communication theory, persuasion, media psychology, persuasive campaign design, and research methods.
