Dr Sunday Cookey Ekpo [BEng (Hons), CEng, PGCAP, MSc, MA, PhD, MIEEE, MIET, MAIAA, SFHEA] is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Department of Engineering, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK with 10+ years of combined industry-linked higher education teaching and research experience. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK; and a Chartered Engineer with 8+ signed NDAs and experience of providing niche expert R&D engineering inputs to world-leading companies spanning satellite broadcast solutions manufacturing; antennas and propagation engineering; voice recognition solutions for next-generation adapted vehicles; reconfigurable RF, millimetre-wave and microwave systems development for ultra-low-power advanced radio access technologies applications; satellite-cellular convergence open radio access network ecosystem; regenerative transponder and reconfigurable transceiver design; and adaptive beamformer development for next-generation vehicular communications. He is an awardee of the Huawei’s Influential Thinkers in Engineering and Technology 2019 in recognition of his industry-linked 5G Communication R&D achievements. He is an Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) Peer Review College Member and a British Council Grants Reviewer. Dr Ekpo has over 50 peer-reviewed and refereed technical publications in advanced radio communication and space systems engineering. He is a Board of Studies International Expert, M. Tech Communication Systems Programme, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University (Coimbatore Campus), India. He is an AdvanceHE UK-Certified External Examiner for Higher Education. He has supervised 7+ postgraduate research students in advanced radio communication systems engineering. Dr Ekpo currently provides the leading industry-linked expertise to the Communication and Space Systems Engineering (CaSSE) research team at the Manchester Met to develop advanced RF antenna and propagation engineering solutions for 5G, industry 4.0, IoTs, biosensor and environmental monitoring applications. Moreover, the CaSSE research team has an industry-linked-and-sponsored radio-over-fibre testbed that enables advanced radio communication engineering research spanning wired, mobile and satellite communications. He regularly gives industry-linked International Distinguished Lectures spanning his research expertise in the following areas: Artificial Intelligence Applications in Radio Communication; Communication Transceiver Front-end Characterisation; Multiphysics Design, Modelling and Simulation of Communication Components and Systems; Fibre Integrated Satellite Signal Reception & Distribution Systems; Hybrid RF-Free-space Optics Physical Layer Characterisation; Smart Sensors Design for Internet of Things and Smart Cities Applications; Integrated Electronic and Optical Components Design; Electronic Communication Data Uplink and Downlink Characterisations; RF Antenna Biosensor Development; Adaptive Beamformer Systems Development; Adaptive Spacecraft Core Bus & Payload Subsystems Design, Modelling, Simulation, Prototyping and Integration. Dr Ekpo is a UK Research and Innovation Early Career Researchers Forum Member and a Carbon Literacy Champion for the Department of Engineering. He is an experienced Industrial Internet of Things Project Lead for the Department of Engineering and Early Career Researchers Coordinator for the Smart Infrastructure and Industry Research Group. Dr Ekpo has R&D engineering collaborations with world-leading home electronics manufacturers and active semiconductors devices process technologies providers . Dr Ekpo is a regular peer-reviewer of high-impact, Q1 technical journal publications (including IEEE and IET). He has secured £600k+ grants for advanced R&D engineering from the Innovate UK; British Council; and the industry. He has been awarded a leading European Microwave Professional recognition status to supervise international postgraduate interns sponsored by the European Microwave Association Innovation Team. Dr Ekpo is a regular organiser and Chair of technical sessions and member of technical programme committees for international refereed conferences in antennas and radio communication (including the European Microwave Integrated Circuits Conference and the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society Conference). He is an Editor of the International Review of Aerospace Engineering Journal and the Electronics (MDPI) Journal. Dr Ekpo coordinates and hosts a monthly virtual global career and destiny empowerment programme entitled “Gathering of Champions” in Manchester, UK
