Bio
I graduated in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge in 1993 specialising in Chemistry and remained there to study for my PhD under the supervision of Prof S.V. Ley. My work focused on developing new protecting groups for carbohydrates and their exploitation in oligosaccharide synthesis. Following completion of my PhD in 1996 I joined the group of Prof Istvan Marko in Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium as a Royal Society European Exchange fellow, with work focused on asymmetric synthesis and intramolecular rearrangements. I moved to the University of Leeds in 1998 as a University Research Fellow and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2004. My current work is extensively collaborative employing our expertise in analytical chemistry and the synthesis of chemical tools to give new insights into biological systems. In collaboration with Prof Adam Nelson we have developed new methods for the efficient discovery of biologically active small molecules using Activity Directed Synthesis while our expertise in peptide chemistry and assay development in collaboration with Prof Andy Wilson has given new insights into protein: protein interactions. An extensive collaboration with Prof Alison Baker exploits chemical tools to discover new feature of the biogenesis and functioning of peroxisomes and has enabled the hijacking of the organelle as a platform for synthetic biology.I have authored over 75 papers and have an h-index of 25 as well as acting as volume editor for volume 29 of the Science of Synthesis monograph I regular act as external examiner for both PhD students and give invited seminars at institutions across the country. Since 2013 I have been Deputy Head of the School of Chemistry.
