Bio
Steven D. Harrah received the Bachelor of Science degree with double majors in physics and mathematics from Marshall University, Huntington, WV, USA, in 1985, and the Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA, in 1987.
He is a Senior Electromagnetics Engineer with more than 35 years of service with NASA's Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA. He is recognized by NASA and the FAA as a Subject Matter Expert for Radar Systems and Enhanced Vision Technologies. He has helped develop and flight demonstrate 13 radar applications that were adopted by commercial radar industry and are now utilized everyday by commercial/military aircraft and flight crews. He joined NASA in 1987. Over the past 35 years, he has been a Principal Investigator and Project Manager/Lead for several of NASA's major ARMD Programs, including: Windshear Program (1987–1995), High Speed Research Program (1995–2000), Aviation Safety Program (2000–2007), and Advanced Air Vehicles Program (2007–2018). In addition to his aviation-centered work, he was the Principal Engineer developing and flight testing NASAs Differential Barometric Absorption Radar that is being considered by the agency for satellite development.
Mr. Harrah and his teams have received numerous (more than) group and team awards, and he was the recipient of 2007 NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal and 2017 NASA Exceptional Service Medal. He is/has been NASA's representative to several Standards Organizations, including Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics, Society of Automotive Engineers, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and EUROCAE Special Committees and Working Groups. He is/has been a Member of American Physical Society, Optical Society of America, Physics and Mathematics Honor Societies, Academy of Science, and Association of Old Crows.
