Dr. Stephen Jones MVB, MS, Dipl. ACVS-SA, DECVS
Dr. Jones is a specialist orthopedic surgeon who prides himself on excellence in patient care, innovation, research and compassion. He is currently based in Park City Utah, where he is an orthopedic surgeon at Bark City Veterinary Specialists.
He is an Irish national, hailing from Co. Monaghan in the east of Ireland. He grew up around dogs, cats, horses, cattle and sheep and knew from a very early age that he wanted to care for animals as a veterinarian. He attended veterinary school at University College Dublin, where he graduated with honors in 2009. Following graduation, he moved to Hollywood in South Florida to complete a rotating and a specialty surgery internship, at the Hollywood Animal Hospital. From there, Dr. Jones moved to Gainesville, Florida where he completed a combined residency in small animal surgery and a Master’s of Science program at the University of Florida. After completion of his residency in 2015, Dr. Jones moved to Columbus, Ohio where he became a member of the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Small Animal Orthopedics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Jones spent over six years on faculty at The Ohio State University, where he honed his passion for performing advanced orthopedic surgery and conducting clinical research, for the betterment of his patients. Dr. Jones is a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS).
During his residency, in recognition of his contributions to orthopedic surgery and research, Dr. Jones won many accolades including the Veterinary Arthrology Advancement Association Resident Research award (2013), Veterinary Orthopedic Society -Best Poster presentation (2013), Veterinary Orthopedic Society Mark Bloomberg Resident Research Award (2014), World Veterinary Orthopedic Conference -best podium presentation (2014), UF College of Veterinary Medicine Resident of The Year (2015), Blackwellking North American Veterinary Resident of The Year (2015), UF Excellence in Masters Studies Award (2015). Following completion of his residency a number of his residents went on to win awards for the research completed under Dr. Jones’ tutelage, including: ACVS – ECVS exchange program award for research (Dr.2017), the American College of Veterinary Surgery Annual Symposium – Presentation Award (2017), the Veterinary Orthopedic Society – Mark Bloomberg Research Award (2021) and the Veterinary Orthopedic Society – Surgeon in Training Award (2022).
To date, Dr. Jones has written and published 20 scientific papers, over 30 scientific abstracts and has also authored several book chapters. His research has been published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR), the Journal of Orthopedic Research, the Veterinary Surgery Journal, the Journal of Small Animal Practice, Veterinary and Comparative Orthopedics and Traumatology (VCOT) journal, the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA), BMC Veterinary Research, Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, Veterinary Evidence, Canadian Veterinary Journal (CVJ) and Clinician’s Brief. Dr. Jones continues to question standard veterinary practices and conventions, and has a number of ongoing and planned clinical research projects that he intends to publish and present at international conferences into the future.
As part of his commitment to improve the quality of orthopedic care for his patients, Dr. Jones is an active member of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society and the AO (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen [German for “Association for the Study of Internal Fixation”]). He continues to help his patients through the design and development of new surgical implants & instrumentation, and through the development (and publication) of new and innovative surgical techniques.
Dr. Jones has a passion for teaching where he can pass on his knowledge to his students, interns, residents and other veterinarians, with the ultimate goal of improving the lives of as many pets as possible. To that end, Dr. Jones is frequently asked to lecture locally, nationally, and internationally. He has given over 300 continuing education lectures and has taught over 100 laboratories. He is a frequent lecturer at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) yearly conference, the Veterinary Orthopedic Society (VOS) conference, and has also lectured at the VMX conference, the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) yearly conference, the Wild West Veterinary Conference, as well as many different state association meetings.
Dr. Jones’ special interests include the management of cranial cruciate ligament rupture, arthroscopy, minimally invasive fracture repair, medical and surgical treatment of joint disease, and surgical management of angular limb deformities.
