Bio
Phytoplankton ecologist using optical methods to study physiology, productivity, and population dynamics in optically complex waterbodies (lakes, coastal areas). Stefan leads R&D into near-coastal and inland remote sensing, using the multi-sensor Calimnos processing chain which maps >4000 inland water bodies daily at medium (300m) to high (100m) resolution (Copernicus Global Land Service). Current research topics include integration of satellite data with in situ water quality measurements, using automated (shipborne) sensor solutions (open source), and low-cost alternatives in a citizen science context, particularly in the €5M H2020-MONOCLE project (coordinator). Stefan is science co-lead of the ESA Lakes Climate Change Initiative. Stefan holds adjunct and associate professorships at the Universities of Helsinki and Stirling, respectively.
