His laboratory discovered the syntrophins, a family of adapter proteins, that associate with dystrophin. The syntrophins direct numerous signaling proteins to the muscle sarcolemma by binding to dystrophin. Disruption of these dystrophin-associated signaling pathways play a prominent role in the pathogenesis of Duchenne and other muscular dystrophies. One of these signaling proteins, neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), is a major focus of research in our laboratory. Recently, the Froehner lab become interested in identifying drugs that that can be repurposed for treatment of DMD and other muscular diseases.
