Bio
Sophie's research focusses on the experiences and outcomes of family diversity, with a specialism in families formed through donor-assisted conception (e.g., sperm donation, egg donation, and surrogacy). She has conducted some of the first studies of children and young people's perspectives and experiences in families headed by single mothers by sperm donation; two-parent families via sperm donation, egg donation, and surrogacy; and trans parent families. Sophie's research is primarily qualitative, with some studies adopting multi and mixed methods designs.
Sophie's research with former colleagues at the Centre for Family Research has had notable influence on policy, both nationally and internationally. Her work was used as evidence in the Law Commission Consultation on Surrogacy and as evidence informing the UK Government’s proposals to change the law to give single men and women legal parentage of their children born through surrogacy (in effect as of January 2019). Her research was also used as evidence in the French Parliament’s Report on the Revision of Bioethics Law.
Sophie's current research, on donor conceived young adults, involves engagement with national charitable organisations Donor Conception Network and Donor Conceived UK, and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the UK's regulator for assisted reproduction.
