Dr. Villapol’s research interests are mainly focused on the elucidating of mechanisms of cell death, gliosis, inflammation and neurogenesis via several models of brain damage (excitotoxicity, ischemia and traumatic brain injury), and how inflammatory mediators connect the brain with the periphery. To date Dr. Villapol’s research has mainly been dedicated towards the development of novel therapeutics to repair the brain after damage, focusing on endogenous inhibitors of apoptosis, nitric oxide, melatonin or angiotensin II receptor inhibitors and exploiting their protective roles in the brain.
Dr. Villapol works closely with Dr. Mark Burns in the Laboratory of Brain Injury and Dementia (LBID). The LBID lab is dedicated to elucidating detrimental pathways triggered after brain injury that are involved in chronic neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer´s disease or traumatic encephalopathyv
