Sohail K. Mirza

Dr. Mirza is currently Medical Director of the Center for Surgical Innovation, Professor of Orthopaedics at Geisel School of Medicine and The Dartmouth Institute, and an attending spine surgeon at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He was Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth tfrom 2010 to 2015. Under his leadership, the orthopedics department led care delivery innovations such as outcomes measurement and shared decision-making in everyday clinical practice, while reducing cost, improving efficiency, and improving patient experience through standardization of care and use of information technology. The department developed models of high-value efficient care delivery by leveraging electronic medical records, standardizing care around evidence base guidelines, and implementing an integrated team-based care delivery model. Dr. Mirza also led efforts to work with health insurance systems to implement progressive reforms such as pay-for-performance and episode-based payment models. Dr. Mirza moved to Dartmouth in 2008 from the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was professor in the departments of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and in Neurological Surgery and held the endowed chair for Spine End Results Research. He was an attending surgeon at Harborview Medical Center, Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, the University of Washington Medical Center, the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. In addition, he was Director of Spine Education and Director of Spine Trauma Research in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Washington.
