Career Trajectory
Bio
Sofia Santos Costa is currently a Researcher at the Unit of Medical Microbiology of IHMT-NOVA and member of the Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM) research center. She obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences, specialization Microbiology in 2013. She holds a MSc degree in Medical Microbiology (2008) and Graduation in Applied Chemistry, specialization Biotechnology.
Her research interests focus on several aspects of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in a OneHealth context, namely the epidemiology and mechanisms of AMR in staphylococci and other bacteria in humans and animals; the contribution of efflux systems and biofilms to AMR; the evaluation of compounds as efflux inhibitors, antimicrobials and/or antibiofilm agents and the application of the Galleria mellonella infection model to study virulence potential and drug efficacy. She is currently the Co-PI of the R&D Project BIOSAFE - Preventing antimicrobial resistance in the community - the safe use of biocides, funded by FEDER/FCT and member of the ENOVAT COST Action (European Network for Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Treatment). Currently, she is involved in several syllabus of MSc and PhD courses covering topics that overlap with her research areas.
She supervises/co-supervised two MSc students and four PhD students. So far, she supervised four MSc students and co-supervised seven MSc students and one Erasmus student. To date, she has authored/co-authored 30 international peer-reviewed publications (h-index of 17).
