Specializations: Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology using NMR methods, Biomolecular Spectroscopy – Metalloproteins, Heterologous Expression of Metalloproteins, Protein-Protein Interactions, Gene Expression, Stress response to metals and oxygen, Denitrification.
Sofia R. Pauleta has finished her Ph.D. in Biochemistry-Biophysical Chemistry, in 2003 from the NOVA University of Lisbon, under the supervision of Prof. Graham W. Pettigrew, University of Edinburgh (UK) and Prof. Isabel Moura, NOVA University of Lisbon. In 2007, after a post-doctoral fellowship under the co-supervision of Prof. Ivano Bertini and Prof. Paola Turano, at CERM, University of Florence (Italy) she returned to Portugal. In 2007, she was awarded an Assistant Researcher position at REQUIMTE, followed by a IF-FCT-2013 researcher, a highly competitive program, as Principal Investigator in 2014, and in 2019 started a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor at FCT-NOVA.
Since 2009, she has been developing her own projects on the characterization of molecular systems (involving metalloproteins and metalloenzymes) responsible for metal tolerance in bacteria, detoxification of reactive oxygen species from pathogenic bacteria, and cell division of anaerobic bacteria using several spectroscopic (visible, EPR, NMR and resonance Raman), steady-state kinetics and biophysical (microcalorimetry) techniques, complemented by proteomics and transcriptomic analysis.
At this moment, her team has 3 Ph.D. students and 5 Master students (4 at the writing state). She has published 65 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and 8 Book Chapters, being to co-Editor of two. Excluding the book chapters, she was the corresponding author of 32 manuscripts and first author of 9, and has an h-index of 19 and h-10 index of 39 (Scopus). She has made 38 Oral communications in Scientific Meetings, 155 Communications in International Scientific Meetings and 57 in National Scientific Meetings. She has received grants as a PI in a total of 840 785 euros in R&D Projects and 15 700 euros in Bilateral Projects with France and Germany.
She has been a member of evaluation panels for the contract of DL57 researchers (4), Junior researchers (4), postdoctoral researchers (3), research scholarships with Master (10) and BSc (10).
She has been a member of evaluation panels and evaluated projects for EU, ANR, BBSRC and Dutch Research Council. She is also a member of the review panel of MOSBRI. She has reviewed more than 60 manuscript submitted in Q1 Journals including Chemical Science, Nature, Angewandte Chemie, JACS.
She has also been involved in COST Action networks, and actively organizing and participating in at least 2 events/year of science outreach.
