Bio
My research focus has always been on Aquatic Ecology. In my early years, including PhD (2003-2008), I studied the impacts of anthropogenic stress on plant-litter decomposition and associated microbiota in streams, at University of Minho (UMinho), at University of Aveiro (Portugal) and University Paul Sabatier (France). In my 1st post-doc (2009-2015), I developed molecular tools to assess fungal diversity in freshwaters, at UMinho and Mount Allison University (Canada). During this time, I secured funding as a principal investigator (PI) for my own research project (FunDiver, €126.886, 2011-2014). In 2016, I shifted my research to coastal and marine ecosystems, successfully completing a 2nd post-doc at CBMA/UMinho (2019), in collaboration with University of Guelph (Canada) and University of Vigo (Spain). My research during this period focused on the use of (e)DNA (meta)barcoding to characterize estuarine benthic communities and to study spatial and temporal patterns, as well as responses to environmental gradients. During this time, I also earned a fellowship to conduct a short-term scientific mission (2017) at AZTI-Tecnalia (Spain), under the scope of the DNAqua-net COST action. My research activity was interrupted, due to maternity leave, between October 2017 and April 2018. In 2019, I became an Assistant Researcher at UMinho, a position granted by FCT (1st ed of the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus) where I established my own research line at CBMA/UMinho and secured funding as a PI to support it (NIS-DNA project, €239.049, 2018-2022). The NIS-DNA project aimed at the early detection and monitoring of non-indigenous species (NIS) in coastal ecosystems based on HTS tools. I have participated (or participate) in 14 projects (~5€M), 2 as principal investigator, 1 as co-principal investigator and I was MC - substitute from Portugal in the EU-COST ACTION DNAqua-Net CA15219 (2016-2021). I co-authored 68 publications with a total IF of 188.2 (52 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 5 book chapters, 12 abstracts in conference proceedings) (WoS: +1400 citations, h-index 21; Scopus: +1500 citations, h-index 21; Scholar: +2400 citations, h-index 27). From these, 50% were published in Q1 journals, 15% in Top 10 and I was the first author in 41%, last author in 12% and corresponding author in 35% in the papers that I have co-authored. Most of my papers have been published in the areas of Marine & Freshwater Biology (22), Ecology (16) and Environmental Sciences (11). I gave 13 talks by invitation, including one plenary and co-authored 76 communications in conferences (27 oral + 49 poster). I have reviewed papers for 38 journals (88 verified reviews in publons), projects for 4 international funding agencies and I am subject editor for Metabarcoding & Metagenomics, since 2017; and since 2022 that I am associate editor for Frontiers in Environmental Science and section editor for Marine Science and Engineering. I have been involved in the supervision of several students including PhD (2), MSc (5), BSc (15) and also research fellows (5). In addition, I have assisted in the supervision of several other students in the scope of their undergraduate, master, doctoral or post-doctoral studies. I have been also involved in lecturing activities to BSc (e.g. “Eye Pharmacology”, “Cell and Molecular Biology”, “Biodiversity and Global Change”, “Microbiology”, “Human Biology”), MSc (e.g. Ecology, Molecular Genetics) and advanced courses (e.g. “Invasions Biology”; “Next Generation Sequencing in Environmental Monitoring”; “Plankton in a changing world”) and in outreach activities of science dissemination to basic and secondary school students and professors, and to the society in general (e.g. EcologyDay, Pint of Science, European researcher’s night, Visits Program of UMinho School of Sciences, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, The researchers return to schools). Since September 2022 that I am the technical representative of University of Minho in the support structure to the commission of co-management of the North Littoral Natural Park, which integrates regional governmental bodies, public agencies and NGOs and is an important protected area, located in the North of Portugal.
