Bio
Prof. Dr. Skye Fortier is a synthetic inorganic chemist and Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Dr. Fortier's research interests includes exploring the reduction chemistry of early metal (Group 3 & 4) complexes, synthesizing and studying the reactivity of late metal nitrides supported by bulky guanidinate ligands, and investigating the chemistry and electronic structure properties of molecular uranium complexes.
Dr. Fortier is a Hispanic researcher, who was raised by his Mexican grandmother in his hometown of El Paso, TX. He received his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Texas at El Paso before spending one year as a high school science teacher. In 2006, he began his PhD studies under the direction of Prof. Dr. Trevor Hayton at the University of California, Santa Barbara, studying the chemistry of high valent uranium complexes. After graduating in 2011, he joined the laboratories of Profs. Drs. Kenneth G. Caulton and Daniel J. Mindiola at Indiana University as a NSF Postdoctoral research fellow. In the Caulton and Mindiola laboratories, Dr. Fortier investigated the synthesis and magnetic properties of iron and cobalt compounds supported by redox active ligands. In 2013, he started his independent career at UTEP.
