Bio
Silvina Masciotra has held several positions in CDC since arriving in 1998. She first joined the HIV Retrovirology branch as a Fellow after receiving her Master’s degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. During her first years at CDC, she identified and described new HIV-1 subtypes circulating in Buenos Aires, Argentina and studied viral and host genetic factors involved in HIV disease progression. After completing her second Master’s degree from the University Francisco de Vitoria (Spain), she returned to CDC where she participated in several evaluations on HIV chemoprophylaxis regimens in a macaque model and HIV drug resistance before focusing on clinical diagnostics. Since 2008, she has been working on HIV diagnostic and surveillance activities and has provided technical leadership in the field to both external and DHP working groups.
She has more than 30 years of experience working with laboratories in national and international settings, including developing, validating, and applying new diagnostic and surveillance methods. As part of the International Experience and Technical Assistant Program (IETA), she acted as the CDC-Cambodia Laboratory Advisor for HIV programs. She also supported various national and international public health emergencies across CDC. During the 2016 Yellow Fever response in Angola and the 2016 Zika response in Puerto Rico, she provided on-site training and technical assistance to the laboratories. She was detailed to HHS COVID-19 Testing and Diagnostics Working group in Washington, DC as the testing subject matter expert in the State Engagement Team and as the lead of the Operation Expanded Testing Program.
She led the DHP HIV CLIA and Test Evaluation Activity from 2019 to 2022, when she joined the CDC-Thailand as the DHP Lab Science Section Chief. She participated in numerous research collaborations, and led and published evaluations on new HIV technologies. Her contributions supported changes to the CDC recommended HIV diagnostic algorithm and helped address HIV diagnostic dilemmas.
