Bio
As a trained muscle physiologist (PhD graduation in 2012) with relevant work experience in physiology, endocrinology and metabolism, I have become specialized in conducting translational human intervention studies with attention for mechanistic working mechanisms. I collect information on the whole-body-, tissue- and even cellular/mitochondrial level to understand how interaction between these different systems affects muscle quality, health, performance and quality of life.
Muscle quality is typically described as muscle strength or power per unit of mass. There are lots of other factors that are not encompassed in the definition but do have the potential to influence muscle quality including metabolism, aerobic capacity, composition (e.g. architecture, contractile characteristics, fibre type, fat infiltration) and innervation and neural activation.
My research vision is to better understand the main factors which underpin changes in muscle quality. To fulfil this vision my research agenda focuses on: i) the development of sensitive and non-invasive muscle quality assessment tools, ii) increasing physiological and mechanistic knowledge on the different determinants of muscle quality, how they interrelate, and how they affect muscle function and health, iii) finding suitable lifestyle and pharmacological interventions to improve muscle quality. Ultimately, it is my research mission to preserve and optimize muscle quality in health and diseased states and thereby contribute to a better physical performance and quality of life.
