Bio
João P Silva (JPS) graduated in Applied Biology (2002) and holds a MSc in Molecular Genetics (2004) and a PhD in Biological Sciences (2009) from the Univ. of Minho (PT). His early research at Centre for Environmental & Molecular Biology focused on assessing the pharmacological targets of newly synthesized antioxidants, unveiling their therapeutic potential in oxidative stress-related disorders. As a Post-Doc Researcher (2010-2016) at Centre of Biological Engineering (UMinho), JPS fostered a transdisciplinary approach, merging his Molecular Biology know-how into the Biotechnology field to tackle prevailing medical challenges by using innovative biomaterial-based strategies to boost the therapeutic potential of antimicrobial peptides for tuberculosis and wound healing, while assessing their molecular action mechanisms.
As a Research Associate at UCIBIO-REQUIMTE (UPorto) since 2016, JPS remains delivering research of high health/social impact, by: 1) unraveling the SC-elicited mechanisms underlying the onset of psychoses; 2) first reporting SC-triggered molecular nephrotoxicity mechanisms; 3) developing improved in vitro models to predict mood/cognitive adverse events at early stages of drug R&D; 4) disclosing the hepatotoxicity of emerging club NPS (e.g. synthetic cathinones, benzofurans).
JPS has (co-)authored several papers published in high-impact (Q1, and top 5%-ranked) journals, 5 book chapters, 80+ oral/poster presentations at national/international meetings, and 10 invited lectures at key scientific events.
A filed PCT patent (WO2017098474A1), an Honor Mention in the Bluepharma/UCoimbra 2016 Innovation Award and an EUROTOX2017 Travel Award support JPS’ research innovation and originality. He integrates the extended Expert list of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction’s Scientific Committee for NPS risk assessment and supports the World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) on the evaluation of drug dependence liability. He is also: External Expert Reviewer in H2020-funded Actions and national PhD Programs; External Advisor for Global Burden of Disease Studies; Editorial Board Member in 5 journals (Int J Mol Sci, PLoS One, Frontiers in Molecular Bioscience, Psychoactives, BMC Health Serv Res); Guest-Editing Special Issue in Int J Mol Sci; peer-reviewer for 21 journals; juror in academic examinations.
JPS has secured funds at national/European competitive Calls as PI/Unit Coordinator and integrated teams of other funded grants. He is also experienced in supervising Post-Doc, PhD, MSc and BSc students.
