Siamak Zarei-Ghanavati; MD, MS, FICO
performed his residency at the Khatam-al-Anbia Eye Center and received the first rank award of Iranian national board in ophthalmology in 2006. He then completed one-and-a-half-year Anterior Segment fellowship at Labbafinejad Medical Center, SBMU, Tehran, Iran. He also studied “Medical Education” and received a Master of Science (MS) degree on it.
In 2007, he achieved the first rank with “Distinction” degree of ICO (International Council of Ophthalmology) assessment (among the 1647 candidates from 61 countries) and ICO-Helmerich Fellowship was awarded to him for advanced ophthalmology training in 2010.
He then performed one-year Cornea and Refractive Surgery fellowship at Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA, USA and one-year fellowship in Ocular Surface Disease at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, UM, USA. In addition, he did 4-month advance Keratoplasty and Eye Banking at Price Vision Group, Indianapolis, USA. After raining in the US, he returned to the home country.
He is now an Associate Professor at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS). He is also director of the International headquarter of the MUMS. He trained more than 100 graduated ophthalmologists and 10 cornea fellows. He has established the second eye bank of Iran which has advance design and equipment.
He delivered over 100 national and international lectures and made over 50 speaking trips. He authored five leading textbooks in the field of cornea, cataract and refractive surgery in English and Persian, authoring over 65 articles in the field of medicine (2017-H-index=12) and seven book chapters. He is a known member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and Iranian Society of Ophthalmology (IrSo).
He is also a member of fellowship committee of International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), council member of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) and a, not to mention his membership in the board of directors of Iranian Society of Ophthalmology (IrSo) and Iranian Cornea and Refractive Surgeons. He is the director of the international committee of Iranian Society of Ophthalmology (IrSo) and his efforts has caused IrSO collaborating several national and super-national societies and became a new member of APAO.
He is the editor in chief of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Journal (PSQIJ), as well as the associate editor of Journal of Current Ophthalmology (JOCO), in addition to be the section editor of Journal of Ophthalmic and Vision Research (JOVR). His cornea and refractive surgery program has been approved by ICO for training international ophthalmologists worldwide. In this capacity, he is currently serving as the director of ICO fellowship program at MUMS and he has trained 7 cornea international fellows from neighboring countries including Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Tajikistan who are among the rare ophthalmologists doing advance cornea surgeries in their countries.
