Bio
I completed my PhD in polymer chemistry in the field of proton/cation exchange membranes (PEM) for fuel cell applications followed by two years of postdoc in the same field. During PhD I worked on tough aromatic polymers called Polybenzimidazoles (PBI) that possess high thermal and mechanical strength and durability that can withstand the high temperatures of fuel cell conditions. My work involved polymer synthesis and membrane fabrication using a variety of nanomaterials like silica nanoparticles, nanoclays, graphene and zirconium oxide and preparation of blend membranes of PBI with other robust polymers like poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The focus of work was on studying the chemical interactions between two polymers and polymer and nanoparticle interfacial interactions and the effect of their different composition on membrane properties. Property study was carried out using various instrumentation techniques that could establish the structural-property correlation with an ultimate aim of improving the proton conducting property of the membranes for use in high temperature PEM fuel cell applications (HT-PEMFCs). During postdoc I worked on polymer membranes based on polyvinylalcohol (PVA) for use in low temperature PEM fuel cell applications whereby iron oxide nanoparticles were employed to create linear alignment of ion conducting nano-channels using external magnetic field. My short term research plan includes fabricating hydroxide(anion) conducting membranes for use in electrochemical devices like anion exchange membrane fuel cells. My long term research plan includes studying membrane systems for gas separation and water purification applications.
