个人简介
Brief CV - Professor Sheila Crewther
BScHons, MSc, DipEd, BOptom, MAPrelimNeuropsych,
PhD(Caltech), MAPS.
Professor of Neuroscience,
School of Psychological Science,
La Trobe University,
Melbourne, 3086.
• Professor Crewther began her studies at Melbourne University then moved to the US to complete her PhD in Neuroscience at Caltech under Nobel Prize Winner Professor Roger Sperry. Sheila has professional qualifications in Neuropsychology, Education and Optometry and these underlie her research into the cognitive and behavioural neuroscience of neuroplasticity in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative anomalies. The aim is to use this knowledge to design better behavioural and therapeutic management regimes. Professor Crewther led the Victorian Government Department of Human Services Review and Report ‘Prevalence and services for children 0-6 years of age with ‘Autism Spectrum Disorders in 2002 -2003. This has resulted in substantially increased funding and the initiation of the first state government general assessment plan for those with autism and their families in Australia. She has also led the research that initiated increased Australian optometric focus (2004-2010) on the role of children’s functional vision in reading and learning and in Intellectual Disability.
• Professor Crewther has published over 250 papers (see pubMed for >200 . She has graduated 10 PhDs in the last 2years and >50 throughout her career.
•Techniques in use in human studies include behavioural psychophysics and brain imaging techniques such as multifocal and event related electrophysiology, functional MRI, diffusion weighted imaging, functional connectivity and transcranial magnetic stimulation and magneto-encephalography. Behavioural, single cell physiology, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and energy dispersive X-Ray microanalysis, molecular and genetics techniques are being used in animal studies of development of refractive errors often in collaboration with Professor David Crewther at Swinburne University and Prof Leeanne Carey at Florey Neuroscience Institutes and members of the School of Optometry at UNSW and members of the Visual Neuroscience laboratory of Prof Zheng Qin Yin, M.D. of Chongqing PRC. Professor Crewther is a Visiting Professor in these Universities.
Current Research Areas
COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE
• The role of the ‘magnocellular [latency] advantage’ in the development of visual processing and visually driven attention especially in neurodevelopmental disorders including autism.
• The neuroscience of development of visual and auditory and cross-modal attention in pre-school and school age children including those with intellectual disability;
• Pathophysiology of reading disability and development of dynamic tools for early identification of ‘children at risk’ of developing reading problems.
BEHAVIOURAL AND MOLECULAR NEUROSCIENCE
• Retinal physiology and its role in the aetiology of ocular pathology and refractive errors.
• The functional role of neuroinflammation and molecular biomarkers in behavioural depression in recovery following stroke.
• Psychophysics, brain imaging and as indicators of attention and depression in recovery following stroke
