个人简介
Dr Shani Dettman worked as a speech pathologist in the Cochlear Implant Clinic (CIC) and researcher at the University of Melbourne from 1987 to 2005, developing protocols for the pre- and post-implant assessment and management of young children with significant hearing loss. In 1997, Shani completed her Masters of Education, at the University of Melbourne which analysed preverbal communication development of children before and after the cochlear implant.
In 2003, Shani completed accreditation for Auditory Verbal Certification. In 2005, she completed her Doctorate of Philosophy at The University of Melbourne which examined the relationship between the primary caregivers’ linguistic, semantic and prosodic input to the child and the child’s long term communication outcomes. This PhD led to numerous post-doctoral studies which described and optimised maternal input to the child with significant hearing loss. Shani was Lead Researcher in past HEARing Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) from 2005-2009 and from 2009-2014 and the HEARing CRC extension; “Seeds of language development” and “Therapies to improve language and literacy in hearing-impaired children” (2014-2019). The HEARing (CRC)s facilitate multi-centre research collaboration regarding evidence based and effective management of paediatric hearing loss. The Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) commissioned Shani Dettman to determine school support factors that influence outcomes of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. A common funding agreement between the VDEI and the University of Melbourne for $377,261 was established for the project (2015-2018) and Dettman engaged a research advisory panel comprised of researchers, parents and stakeholders. In addition to research commitments, Shani was the Speech Pathology Development Co-ordinator for the new Master of Speech Pathology course which commenced at the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology, University of Melbourne in 2011, and played a major role in curriculum development. Shani has supervised 80 University of Melbourne students since 2000 to successfully meet the requirements for their research minor thesis. These research projects have been presented at local and international conferences, allowing the students to experience working within a research team, and wider dissemination of their results. Shani has mentored a number of these students to enable them to achieve their own first-author publications. She has supervised/co-supervised 6 PhDs to completion, and is presently supervising 2 PhD students. Shani is currently (February, 2021) Senior Lecturer at the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology, University of Melbourne and has been invited speaker on nine occasions (Brazil, 1998; Australia, 2010; 2012; 2018; 2019; Sweden, 2018; Malaysia, 2019; India, 2020 [zoom], Hong Kong 2021 [zoom]) She is well known for her work demonstrating the efficacy of cochlear implants for infants younger than 12 months. Shani has authored/co-authored: 51 journal articles; 5 book chapters; and over 200 conference papers.
