Bio
Seth Oppong is a Professor of Psychology. His work is focused on the development of psychological science in Africa. He contributes to this effort through his research in history of psychology, indigenous psychology and other projects grounded in a decolonial, epistemic paradigm. His resolve is that indigenous psychology and studies done through the decolonial, epistemic paradigm will contribute to a more holistic and comprehensive understanding of human experiences. In this way, Psychology can become a truly global science. Perhaps, one of his major contributions has been his proposed African-centered theory of intelligence, the theory of valued human cognitive abilities, published recently. Commenting on the theory, Dr. Peter M. Bentler, Distinguished Research Professor at UCLA Psychology, said, "What is missing, and what you attempt to provide, is an alternative conceptualization for Africa. No doubt we also need alternative conceptualizations for other cultures. Then, perhaps, a more general human cross-cultural conceptualization will emerge." Similarly, Dr. Tedd Judd, a cross-cultural neuropsychologist at the Washington-based Neuropsychological and Psychoeducational Services, has described his model as “ great, and groundbreaking!” and argued that "This is exactly the kind of questioning of fundamental assumptions that we have been hoping for from a real cultural neuropsychology..." Although I disagree with him, Dr. Kevin McGrew, the Director of the Institute for Applied Psychometrics (LLC), also describes it as a "Thought provoking adaptation and extension of CHC [Cattell–Horn–Carroll] theory of intelligence to African culture ". Seth holds that the current Anglo-American perspective is legitimate but limited and cannot accurately account for experiences of all humans. He comes to the cultural, history, philosophical, and theoretical (CHPT) domain of Psychology from an industrial/organizational psychology background at the master's level. He obtained his PhD (Psychology) from the University of Ghana, Legon. He was an international visiting scholar to North Carolina State University, a Carnegie scholar at the University of Ghana, and a fellow of Africa Early Childhood Network (AfECN) based in Nairobi, Kenya. He is currently a member of AfECN Regional Research Technical Team, African Union CESA ECED Knowledge Generation Core Working Group, advisory board member of Early Childhood Network-Ghana, Ghana Psychological Association, and an established leader with American Psychological Association’s Global Psychology Learning Leadership Institute. He is also the first Ghanaian psychologist to have obtained all his degrees (BA to PhD) at a Ghanaian university to become a full professor of psychology globally. He is an Associate Editor at Frontiers in Psychology (Cultural Psychology, section), an Editorial Consultant at The Journal of Black Psychology, and a Consulting Editor at both Journal of Psychology in Africa and Adversity & Resilience Science as well as an Editorial Board member at Journal of Community Psychosocial Research. Seth is also the first Black African to join the Academic Council of Child & Family Blog. In addition, he is the first and the only Africa-based scholar to serve on the editorial board of The Journal of Black Psychology. He has worked in universities in Ghana, Liberia, and is currently working in Botswana. He is also a Research Associate with the Department of Psychology, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
