Bio
Professor Sergio Rutella is a physician-scientist (haematologist by training) with a broad background in tumour immunology, leukaemia biology and stem cell transplantation. He received his M.D. from the Catholic University Medical School of Rome in 1993 (summa cum laude), followed by residency and fellowship in Haematology in 1997 (summa cum laude) and Ph.D. in Experimental Haematology in 2001. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, London, UK. He holds a licence to practise Haematology from the Italian "Ordine dei Medici Chirurghi e degli Odontoiatri" and from the General Medical Council (UK).
Before joining the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre at NTU, Sergio was the Executive Director of Clinical Research at Sidra Medical & Research Centre, Doha, Qatar (2014-2016) and served as the Chairman of Immunohaematology and Transfusion Medicine at the Bambino Gesú Children’s Hospital in Rome, Italy, from 2012 to 2014. Previous to these posts, he was Consultant Haematologist and Assistant Professor of Haematology at the Catholic University Medical School in Rome, Italy (2000-2012).
Professor Rutella received merit awards from the American Association of Immunologists in 2011, 2006, 2003 and 2002 for research into dendritic cell-based tolerance and regulatory T cells. His current research efforts focus on the molecular and cellular mechanisms mediating immune dysfunction in patients with leukaemia and on therapeutic strategies to revert immune suppression and improve clinical outcome in patients with cancer. In 2019, Sergio received the Vice-Chancellor's Outstanding Researcher Award from Nottingham Trent University, UK.
Sergio has published 218 scientific articles and 13 book chapters (cumulative IF>1,700; current H-index=57; i10-index=178; times cited=11,900 [Google Scholar]), and has supported his research through competitive grants (£4,714,000) from National/International funding bodies and commercial entities. He has >25 years teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, with teaching contracts in haematological oncology, stem cell biology and transplantation, immunology and virology.
