Career Trajectory
Bio
John E. Scharer (SM’90) received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and plasma physics from the University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA, USA.
He had sabbaticals with the Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique, Fontenay-aux-Roses, France, carrying out nonlinear plasma wave research in 1970, the Joint European Torus, Abingdon, U.K., modeling ion cyclotron resonance heating in D-T fusion plasmas in 1983, and Australian National University, Canberra, ACT, Australia, carrying out helicon plasma research in 2000. He has substantial research experience in the areas of plasma wave coupling, propagation and heating, nonlinear and quantum multiphoton laser plasma ionization, optical emission spectroscopy, and millimeter-wave interferometry. He also has substantial experience in theoretical, computational, and experimental research on plasma wave coupling, propagation and heating in the RF, microwave and laser (visible and UV) frequency ranges, and creative plasma diagnostics. He is currently an Emeritus Professor with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI, USA.
