个人简介
Santiago received his PhD in Biological Sciences from the Center for Genomic Sciences (CCG), National Autonomous University of Mexico, conducting phylogenomic studies of Alphaproteobacteria. He then pursued postdoctoral research in microevolution and phylogeography of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), under the supervision of Ed Feil (University of Bath) in England. Santiago is Associate Professor in the Evolutionary Genomics Research Program at the CCG. His initial work concentrated on the molecular evolution and the phylogeography of MRSA and Borrelia burgdoferi, yet his most recent work focuses on the processes underpinning the genomic variation and the dispersal of Acinetobacter baumannii (an important nosocomial pathogen) and closely related species.
To date Santiago has published 54 articles, which have more than 2020 citations and he has an h-index of 24 and i10-index of 36. He is Associate Editor of the journals Plos Neglected Tropical Diseases and Frontiers in Microbiology; he is also member of the editorial board of Applied Environmental Microbiology and Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotheraphy both American Society for Microbiology journals. He has served as reviewer for over 20 journals, among them PNAS, Genome Research, Molecular Biology and Evolution, and Lancet Infectious Diseases. Additionally, he has acted as a reviewer for grant agencies in Mexico (National Council for Science and Technology), Canada (NSERC Discovery grants and John R. Evans Leaders Fund) and United Kingdom (Medical Research Council, Fellowships scheme). He has supervised a couple of postdocs, graduated one PhD student and two undergraduate students. Currently, he is supervising one postdoc, one PhD student and one Master student.
Recently, together with Michael Gillings and Timothy Ghaly (from Mcquarie University), we led the special issue “One Health & Antimicrobial Drug Resistance” (link below) for Environmental Microbiology.

He also coordinated the research topic “Genomic Basis of Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence in Acinetobacter” for Frontiers in Microbiology.
