My current research in marine ichthyology is carried out in various fields: systematics, life history features, historical ecology and conservation. I have a particular interest in the development of issues at the interface of these different disciplines. My work focuses on a wide variety of taxonomic groups ranging from elasmobranchs (rays and sharks) to very small bony fish such as Gobiidae or Gobiesocidae. A majority of the subjects are developed in the North-East Atlantic, however other current works relate to tropical zones (Caribbean, New Caledonia) and approach species encountered from the intertidal zone to the bathypelagic domain.
The topics in molecular systematics are carried out for the purposes of phylogenetic reconstruction and distinction of species, in particular through molecular barcoding, and allowing taxonomic revisions. Studies on life history features in the North Atlantic are concerned with the phenomenon of colonization by non-native species in relation to global warming. A biogeographical problem of the transatlantic colonization phenomenon is also developed for intertropical species. Finally, I am interested in more detail in several threatened species of ray and tag and release at sea is performed to obtain the biological parameters necessary for the models of population dynamics, for the sake of restoration. Historical ecology is discussed for elasmobranch species whose ancient overexploitation, from the beginning of the industrial era, led to their regional extinction. Their absence in the current fishery data sets, coupled with ignorance of their disappearance, leading to their non-evaluation by the authorities for the management and conservation of marine resources. Finally, I’m interested in revealing ignored historical pages on the origins of European ichthyology from the 17th to the 19th century, preserved in the form of unpublished manuscripts.
