Bio
I am a doctor and a public health academic. In medicine, I was trained in internal medicine and cardiology and currently practice hospital cardiology. In public health, my training was in epidemiology and health policy/systems. The public health areas where I have devoted the most effort are non-communicable diseases (NCDs), public health in the Arab world, health in relation to war/conflict, humanitarian research, and human rights. I consider myself to be a public health generalist too.
I do my work through regional and international collaborations. I have served as Co-Chair and Convener of the Lancet-AUB Commission on Syria: Health in Conflict and Founding Chair of the Global Alliance on War, Conflict & Health, and a Commissioner in the IAS-Lancet Commission on Health and Human Rights. I led the Public Health in the Arab World initiative (see book of same title, Cambridge University Press, 2012). I co-led (with Huda Zurayk and Rita Giacaman) the Lancet Series Health in the Arab world: a view from within (published in 2014).
