Bio
Technical executive and entrepreneur with deep expertise in engineering, distributed systems, artificial intelligence, data science, and product. Focused on both developing and deploying state-of-the-art solutions for web and mobile applications, including growth, recommendations, NLP, knowledge graphs, and more, across both consumer and enterprise (B2B SaaS).
I've built and managed multi-site engineering teams of 100+ and shipped products at startups and public companies that scaled to hundreds of millions of users, driving significant growth, engagement, and revenue. I’ve architected and delivered several large-scale infrastructure projects that process petabytes of data, providing significant engineering productivity gains, and enabling new applications in web products and machine learning. I've successfully productionized novel research, bringing these solutions to market to solve challenging business problems.
I've also run numerous large, horizontal, company-wide projects at scale around digital and AI transformation, data quality, moving from single to multi-master in a new datacenter, building company-wide engineering hiring processes, preparing for IPO, and more.
Most recently, I was co-founder and CTO of SkipFlag, a venture-backed startup funded by Accel & Greylock. Our product used companies’ internal communication, support tickets, and documents to automatically build and update an enterprise knowledge base. We were bought by Workday, a public company, to form a new line of business.
I'm a proponent of open source, being an Apache committer and having contributed to numerous open-source projects. I co-created Apache DataFu, a library used in most big data distributions.
I'm also a big believer in connecting technology to civics. I most recently lent my skills to build models of the COVID-19 epidemic for California, FEMA, and other states. Our work was instrumental to better control the pandemic.
