Bio
The research activity mainly concerns with the structural and dynamical characterization of disordered systems of biophysical interest for understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in biological processes, such as bioprotection and stabilization, through a transdisciplinary approach. Complementary spectroscopic techniques, such as Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Brillouin Scattering, Neutron Scattering, Synchrotron Radiation, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, ultrasonic and thermodynamic techniques, are used. The most relevant results have been achieved in the following topics: mechanisms of protection of biological molecules under environmental stress conditions by natural bioprotectant systems (trehalose and its homologues); structural and dynamic properties of macromolecular and polymer systems; physical-chemical properties of microemulsions and gels.
