Bio
Dr Sally Baker is an Associate Professor in Migration and Education at the Australian National University. Sally's research interests centre on policy and practice related to equity in higher education, with a specific focus on academic language and literacies/ oracy, transitions, and support.
Sally has received over $2.5m of competitive funding to undertake studies exploring students' cultural and language transitions into and through undergraduate study. Sally is particularly interested in students from forced migration backgrounds and other Culturally and Linguistically Marginalised migrant groups. Her work seeks to bring together teaching and research to challenge the dominant deficit discourses that proliferate in neoliberal institutions, which serve to position students as ‘lacking’ vital ‘skills’, which in turn serves to hide the institutional responsibility to better support the diversified and growing student body. Within the current market logics that frame and drive global higher education policies and practice, this focus is arguably more necessary than ever.
