Bio
Dr. Gaikwad is working as a Neuro-Immunologist, and he is trained in investigations of regulatory mechanisms of sterile and non-sterile inflammation and immune responses. He uses experimental animals as well as tissues from humans as model systems. The major focus of his research is to understand the molecular basis of neuroinflammation and identify the mechanism by which neurons-glia signaling controls the aging and related immune responses, including neuroinflammation and T-cell responses. Dr. Gaikwad participated in the discovery of the direct inflammatory activity of HMGB1-regulated inflammasome activation and the therapeutic role of monoclonal anti-CD40. He and his colleagues discovered the role of CD40 in the regulation of neuroinflammation, and identified the molecular mechanisms for signal transduction by signaling through pattern recognition receptors. This provided the first direct evidence to unify mechanisms of inflammation produced by molecules derived from the pathogen and host.
