Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. S. W. Schwenterly (M '99) received the B.S. degree, cum laude in physics, from Yale University in 1967 and the Ph.D. degree in physics from Cornell University in 1973. Since 1972 he has been on the research staff of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. During 1973–76, he served on the U.S. Soviet Union Superconducting Power Transmission Exchange. From 1980 to 1987, he was a research staff member and operating crew supervisor in the IEA Large Coil Task at ORNL. During 1990–1993, he split his time between ORNL and the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), where he participated in design and procurement of the liquid helium refrigeration system for the SSC Main Magnet Ring. His research activities have included investigations of cryogenic dielectric materials and development of high voltage components for superconducting utility equipment, superconductor ac loss measurements, cryopumping studies for fusion applications, and development of superconducting motors, transformers, generators, and cables.
