Bio
Simona Polo is the director of the Molecular Machines in Signaling Pathways research program at IFOM since 2005. She is also Associate Professor in Pathology at University of Milan. Born in Milan in 1968, Simona Polo studied Biological Sciences at the University of Milan, graduating cum laude in 1991 and honorable mention. She received her Ph.D. in Genetics at the University of Milan, where she worked with Prof. Gianni Deho' on bacteriophages and Streptomyces biology. From 1996 to 1999 she conducted postdoctoral research at San Raffaele scientific Institute under the guidance of Prof. Paolo Lusso who discovered the chemokine receptor CCR5, responsible for the HIV entry. In that period, she made important contributions studying the molecular determinants of the receptor-binding and HIV-inhibitory functions of chemokines that act as natural antagonists of HIV. In 1999 she joined the group of Prof. Pier Paolo Di Fiore at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) Milan as staff scientist, acquiring a strong expertise in the field of endocytosis. At that time she discovered and defined the role of ubiquitin in the internalization of the epidermal growth factor receptor, EGFR. Since 2005, she started her own lab at IFOM studying ubiquitin as a signaling device with a particular focus on cancer biology. Her work, along with the work of other colleagues in the field, led to the definition of ubiquitin as a signalling molecule, essential in the regulation of numerous cellular pathways and frequently implicated in the pathogenesis of human diseases. Research in her lab is currently focused on the NEDD4 family of ubiquitin E3s. These enzymes are critical determinants of substrate and ubiquitin chain specificity, and are central coordinators of the activation of downstream signaling pathways. In Polo lab, biochemical and biophysical techniques, including mass spectrometry and crystallography, are coupled with classical mammalian cell-based assays and with the use of Drosophila model system. She published more than 80 peer reviewed ISI-indexed publications, with an H-index of 39 (December 2020). In recognition of her studies, Simona Polo was elected EMBO Young Investigator in 2009 and EMBO member in 2016.
