个人简介
I started my scientific career in 2002, since then, I have been contributing to the fields of neuroscience, brain pathology and cell reprogramming and my scientific background includes training in institutions from 3 different countries, Spain, USA and Germany. I have authored an international patent and 24 publications, from which 19 are original articles, 3 scientific revisions (10 as first author, 10 as collaborator and 3 as corresponding) and 2 book chapters. My last article is currently in revision.
After obtaining my biology degree at the Complutense University of Madrid, I initiated my PhD studies in the field of neuroscience (funded by a competitive fellowship from the Comunidad de Madrid), under the supervision of Dr. Margarita Diaz-Guerra. I focused my predoctoral work in the glutamate NMDA receptors and several interacting postsynaptic proteins involved in the cerebrovascular disease and neurodegeneration. My findings produced 5 original articles from which I am first author of 4, including renowned journals such as "Molecular Psychiatry". In addition, during my PhD work I gained 2 competitive fellows for 2 sort-term stays (Comunidad de Madrid, 2003, 2 weeks and 2004, 8 weeks) at the previous laboratory of Prof. Peter Scheiffele (Columbia University, New York) to develop lentiviral vectors for the efficient expression of recombinant proteins in neurons, producing an additional article from which I am also first author. After my PhD training I moved to Munich to the lab of Prof. Magdalena Götz where I worked in the field of neuronal direct reprogramming. I actively participated in the first article demonstrating that astroglia can be reprogrammed into fully functional neurons (Heinrich et al., 2010). My active contribution in the field is also corroborated by an international patent and my co-authorship in 10 publications focusing in the reprogramming topic. In my last main study, published in “Cell Stem Cell”, I identified metabolic constraints blocking neuronal reprogramming. This work has been highlighted in F1000Prime as being of special significance. However, my scientific contribution was not restricted to the reprogramming field, as I also participated in 6 studies addressing fundamental questions in regards to neurogenesis, neuronal connectivity and the stem cell potential of reactive glia. Currently, I hold a group leader investigator position (Ramon y Cajal Program) at the Cajal Institute-CSIC, and co-affiliation to the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich (Germany), and my work focuses on new strategies to improve neuronal reprogramming and to develop human models of brain diseases.
The significance of my research is supported by the fact that my publications have been cited 4877 times (3619 in the last 5 years), and my work has been selected for international scientific meetings, such as American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair meeting and scientific divulgation forums, as the Conference-Debate "Regenerative Medicine" from the Nature Publishing Group, among others. I also successfully supervised the work of 2 PhD students, 10 Master students and one Graduate student, and I participated on thesis advisor committees such as the Life Science of Munich (LSM, 2018-2019) and the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry IMPRS-LS (2012-2015). Currently, I am supervising 4 PhD thesis.
My visibility is corroborated by peer review activities in prestigious journals, from which Cell Reports (2x), Cell Stem Cell (6x), Nature Communications (1x), Molecular Psychiatry (1x), Molecular Therapy (2x) and Stem Cell Reports (1x) are over 9 impact-factor. In the same line, I also have served as member of the scientific commissions on the evaluation of Juan de la Cierva 2020 (Spain), BBRSC Bioscience for the future UK Research and Innovation Grants (UK), PRELUDIUM-19 2020 at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin (Poland) and Foundation Recherche Medicale proyects (France), and revised grants from different agencies, such as Proyectos Investigación Básica Línea PIBA - País Vasco-2020-2022 (SPain), Agencia Nacional de Evaluación de Proyectos ANEP (Spain), Proyectos de Investigación en Salud FIS 2018 (Spain). Moreover, I have participated in the organization of symposiums for national and international meeting, such as the XII European Meeting on Glial Cells 2015 and the CajalXMas meeting 2020 and 2021. I am also an editorial board member of Frontiers in Neuroscience (2018-present) and our laboratory frequently participates in dissemination activities in radio, press and professional social media platforms, as well as face-to-face events.
