SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
GENERAL LINES OF INVESTIGATION
The research activity has been developed in the field of ecology of aquatic ecosystems, including the following topics of interest and expertise: a) Ecology and conservation of aquatic species; b) Biodiversity and functioning of riparian and aquatic ecosystems; c) Environmental monitoring in surface waters (with special focus on benthic invertebrates, fish populations and habitat characterization); d) watershed planning; e) Extreme weather events; f) Environmental Impact Assessment in watercourses and definition of mitigation measures; g) Integrated environmental rehabilitation in watercourses for promoting biodiversity; h) Ecophysiology of freshwater bivalves; i) Freshwater Exotic Species
Integrates the research team of the Fluvial Ecology Laboratory, formerly called Hydrology Laboratory, of UTAD since 1997. This Laboratory is an interdisciplinary structure for research, scientific training and service delivery aimed at the development of studies and methodologies in the fields of ecological monitoring of the main national aquatic biotopes, with particular emphasis on the study of aquatic fauna components (fish, macroinvertebrates), flora and aquatic and riverine habitats. It also elaborates environmental impact studies (EAI) and environmental requalification projects integrated in water courses to promote biodiversity, encompassing all the components of the execution projects, from the characterization to the definition of techniques of physical and landscape re-qualification and post- evaluation.
The Fluvial Ecology Laboratory of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro has implemented and certified a Quality Management System (QMS) by the world's leading external organization for certification and conformity assessment services, Bureau Veritas Certification (BVC) within the framework of ISO 9001: 2008. This Laboratory is also an accredited entity by the Portuguese Institute of IP Accreditation (IPAC) according to standard NP EN ISO / IEC 17025 for the testing of fresh natural water samples (except for groundwater, thermal, bathing and rainwater) for physical and chemical analysis.
Since 2007 is an Integrated Member and member of the Scientific Council of the Center for Research and Agro-Environmental and Biological Technologies (CITAB). It is part of the Eco-integrity (EI) group, whose main objective is to monitor, protect and restore natural resources at various scales of observation in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This group works on identifying and selecting appropriate ecological indicators for specific environments, a crucial process for making accurate predictions about how degraded systems can be improved. The EI group uses a holistic approach to assessing ecological status in complex, natural, semi-natural, and artificial ecosystems, changed, and how the anthropogenic environment changes them.
