Prof. Solomon Esharegoma OMONIGHO currently works at the Department of Microbiology, University of Benin, Benin City. Prof. S.E Omonigho does research in Food and Industrial Microbiology, Mycology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. His current projects are 'Effect of preservative treatments on Foods and Bioremediation of biodeteriorated environments'.
Prof. Solomon Esharegoma OMONIGHO was born 30th March, 1962 into the family of late Chief Omonigho Oberuohwo and Madam Eyarioma Oberuohwo both of Kokori-Inland, Ethiope East Local Government Area, Delta State.
He attended Nigeria Baptist Convention Primary School, Kokori-Inland from 1968 to 1973 where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate and then proceeded to St. Kevin’s College now known as Kokori Grammar School, Kokori-Inland between 1973 and 1979 where he obtained his O’Level Certificate and gained admission into the prestigious citadel of learning University of Benin in 1981. He obtained his first degree in Microbiology in 1985 with a Second Class Honours Degree (Upper Division), Masters in Food and Industrial Microbiology in 1989 and later crowned his quest for knowledge with a Ph.D. degree in Microbiology in 2007.
At the completion of his National Youth Service in Kano, 1986, where he worked as a Laboratory Technologist, Professor Solomon Omonigho returned to the south and picked up an appointment as a Secondary School Teacher with the Post Primary Education Board, Benin City and Asaba from 1988 to 1993. He was appointed in 1993 to join the services of the University of Benin as an Assistant Lecturer from where he rose through the ranks until he was announced a Professor of Food and Industrial Microbiology in October, 2011.
Professor Omonigho has published over 60 journal articles in reputable local, national and international journals. He is a member of various professional societies, some of which are: Nigerian Society of Microbiology (NSM); Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN); The Nigerian Society of Plant Protection (NSPP); The Nigerian Phytopathological Society (NPS); American Society for Microbiology (ASM); International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS).
As an astute researcher with a passion for academic development, Professor Solomon E. Omonigho has supervised hundreds of undergraduate, over 50 Master’s degree and 10 PhD. students in the Dept. of Microbiology. He has also served in various capacities and in various committees of the University. Some of which are Postgraduate coordinator and Exam Officer in his Department from 2012 to 2015, Head of Department from 2015 to 2016 and 2020 to 2022, Faculty of Life Sciences, Representative to Faculty of Engineering, 2014 – 2018, Senate Representative on Academic Policy and Planning Committee (APPC) from 2016 to 2021, amongst several others. Prof. Solomon Omonigho has also been of service to the National University Commission NUC on various Accreditation assignments and External Examiner/Assessor to various Universities in the Country.
His religious life is not starved as he is an active member of the Men’s Missionary Union of the Nigeria Baptist Convention. He is the current President of St. Kevin’s College Old Boys Association (SKCOBA), Benin Branch. Prof. Omonigho likes reading, farming, computer gadgets, watching football among many other hobbies.
Professor Solomon OMONIGHO is happily married to Dr. Deaconess Stella Omonigho, the present Ag. Head, Dept. of Foreign Languages and they are blessed with 2 children – Miss Oghenefejiro Stephanie OMONIGHO and Master Solomon Oghenefega OMONIGHO.
