个人简介
I have a joint appointment as an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences, University of Southampton, and Professor in Health Studies at VID Specialised University, Oslo. At Southampton, I am the National Co-ordinator for the Applied Research Collaborations (ARC) Dementia Post-Doctoral Training Programme, and the University's Doctoral Training Centre in Dementia Care. At VID, I co-lead the Citizen’s Project (CitPro) Everyday Citizenship for Persons in Vulnerable Situations.
In 2022, I completed a Return to Nursing Practice course, which involved returning to clinical practice as a mental health nurse. She was invited to become of editor of the journal 'Dementia: International Journal of Social Research and Practice' and fulfilled that role from January 2019 to December 2022.
I have a degree in Politics and Masters in Cultural Politics from the University of East Anglia and PhD in Sociology from Oxford Brookes University.
My research and pedagogical interests are on the intersections between disability studies, sociology, qualitative research paradigms and methods, mental health, ageing, and nursing. I specialize in dementia care and citizenship, and have been instrumental in bringing a citizenship lens to the field of dementia studies. My most cited paper is Bartlett, R and O’Conner, D (2007) From personhood to citizenship: broadening the conceptual base for dementia practice and research’. Journal of Aging Studies, 21, pp. 107-118. This work is one of the most cited articles in the Journal of Aging Studies and is core reading for students on Masters programmes around the world. I have published over 60 peer-reviewed research articles, three books, as well as editorials, essays, and thought pieces for mainstream media I have designed and led projects funded by the ESRC and Alzheimer's Society, and work collaboratively with scholars from various disciplines and community groups in Norway, the UK and across Europe. I am a member of the ESRC Peer Review College and I was on the grant board of the EU Joint Programme - NeuroDegenerative Disease Research. I am often asked to give talks at important events in the UK and overseas. I was a plenary speaker at the Mid-Term European Sociological Ageing Conference, organised by Jyvaskyla University Finland. I provide reviews on research bids, book proposals, and manuscripts for major funders and publishers.
I am committed to inclusive research methods and using creative arts-based methods to communicate research findings. Between 2010 and 2011, I led an ESRC funded follow on funding project with the University of Bradford’s Fellow of Visual Arts that aimed to design and curate a touring and online exhibition in partnership with men and women with dementia, a professional installation artist and documentary filmmaker. The resultant exhibition was called No Limits| Reimagining Life with Dementia and toured three cities in the UK in 2011: Bradford, as part of the British Science Festival; Glasgow, as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival, and Liverpool for the Dementia Care Congress. The online exhibition was launched in August 2011 and received over 3000 unique visitors.
I have Postgraduate Certificates in Social Research Methods and Higher Education Practice and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. I have supervised ten PhD students to completion and over 20 Masters students.
I am interested in the advancement of post-graduate and doctoral education on social research methods as evidenced by the following (1) I developed and delivered a new training workshop on ‘Advances in Diary Method’ for the Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences, and UK National Centre for Research Methods (2) authored a text on ‘Diary Method’ (with Prof Milligan/Lancaster) published by Bloomsbury Academic and (3) establishing a Facebook Group on Advances in Diary Method, which has over 100 members (3) I organised an overseas fieldtrip to Linköping University in Sweden, and a writing retreat in South Wales, to create further opportunities for professional and career development for PhD students funded by the DTC and NIHR.
