He is supported in this position by the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS), and serves as a Conservation Biologist in the CZS Conservation Sciences Department. He has more than 35 years experience working with marine mammals, including bottlenose, spinner and spotted dolphins, as well as gray, bowhead, blue and humpback whales, and manatees. He helped to initiate, and currently spearheads the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, the world's longest running study of wild dolphins, as a collaborative effort between Mote Marine Laboratory and the Chicago Zoological Society. This research includes studies of the biology, behavior, health, physiology, ecology, and human impacts, focusing on four generations of resident bottlenose dolphins in Sarasota Bay. Monthly dolphin survey work is supported by Earthwatch volunteers, and more information on these surveys can be found at Earthwatch Expeditions about wild dolphin societies page.
