Bio
My research agenda focuses on aging, race/ethnicity, and chronic health conditions [CC; i.e., conditions that last a year or more, require ongoing medical attention, and/or limit activities of daily living, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD), breast cancer, type II diabetes, depression, cognitive and physical functioning, and asthma]. I am an interdisciplinary scholar (e.g., sociology, gerontology, and public health) who seeks to understand and explain why racial/ethnic disparities in CC exist and find solutions. I use social determinants of health (SDOH) and biomedical explanations to examine pathways linking individual, interpersonal, and structural determinants to CC in adults and older adults and create prevention and intervention solutions to reduce and eliminate these disparities. SDOH is a social-ecological approach examining multiple levels of risk factors to address health disparities and achieve health equity. A biomedical framework focuses on an individual’s physiology and the presence or absence of symptoms of sickness. To address health disparities, I study multiple SDOH and biomedical risk factors. I use Meyers’ (2007) social-ecological health disparities conceptual model to illustrate my research agenda (Figure 1). This research matters because CC are growing in the United States (U.S.), and population aging is the biggest contributor to the increased prevalence of CC. People with CC use more healthcare and have higher risks of taking multiple medications, disability, and mortality. CC are also the leading contributors to healthcare spending. My research has identified targets to improve the health and life expectancies of racialized individuals in the U.S.
