Dr. Ron Oppenheim is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy. Before his retirement in 2013, he was a member of the Wake Forest faculty for 31 years. Prior to that, he was on the faculty of the Neurobiology Program at UNC- Chapel Hill for 14 years. He received his Ph.D. in 1968 from Washington University in St. Louis where he worked with two eminent Neurobiologists, Viktor Hamburger and the 1986 Nobel Laureate, Rita Levi-Montalcini. He helped found the current Neuroscience Graduate Program at WFU in 1996 and served as its Director until his retirement. His research in developmental neurobiology was continuously funded throughout his almost 50 year career by NIH, NSF, and private companies and foundations, resulting in the publication of 230 journal articles and book chapters. He served on the editorial board of a number of journals and received several national and international prizes and awards, including the Viktor Hamburger Developmental Neurobiology Award in 2000, the Heinz Prechtl Award for Developmental Neurology in 2005 and, locally, the first WFU Established Investigator in Basic Sciences Award in 1997. He has trained 49 Ph.D. and Postdoctoral students and continues to contribute to and participate in the Neuroscience Program and is currently working on a book tracing the history of developmental neuroscience from the 19th century.
