个人简介
My interest generally lies in using computational approaches to answer epidemiology research questions, with a focus on using contact/social networks in addition to other epidemiological data of individuals, mobility patterns, air quality, meteorological conditions, pathogen genomic data (such as Whole Genome Sequences), machine learning/artificial intelligence (AI)/data science, statistical analysis, mathematical and statistical modelling and simulations to understand the transmission of infectious diseases and the interplay between infectious and non-communicable diseases.
I hold a PhD in Computational Epidemiology (Epidemiology, Bioinformatics) from the University of Georgia, USA. For the PhD thesis, I used Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (MTB) Whole Genome Sequence analysis of data from pathogen isolates of index TB cases; Social Network Analysis (SNA) of social networks of index TB cases and a sample of controls; and Mathematical and Statistical modelling by simulating a TB epidemic model on the observed social network to understand endemic transmission dynamics of MTB in an urban setting in Sub-Saharan Africa. My PhD studies were funded by a Fogarty-NIH PhD fellowship.
I hold an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) in Computational Biology from the University of Cambridge, UK where I developed a method to explore fatty acid profiles from epidemiological data as a tool for understanding metabolic and nutritional health and disease. This work was presented at the 1st International Conference on Computational Modelling of Metabolic Health, Inflammation and Diabetes in Cambridge, UK. The degree was funded by a Commonwealth Scholarship and a Commonwealth, Cambridge and European Trust fellowship.
I also hold a first-class honours undergraduate degree (mathematics major, statistics minor) from Makerere University, Uganda. For my undergraduate internship, in a combined effort with a colleague, we developed a spirometer calculator for African school children that is used to predict outcomes in a study on Asthma. The degree was done on sponsorship by the government of Uganda (National Merit).
I have previously worked under the Medical Research Council (MRC) at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) where I analyzed immuno-data in a study to investigate the effect of Schistosoma mansoni infection on the immunogenicity of a candidate TB vaccine, MVA85A, in BCG-vaccinated African adolescents. While at UVRI, I also worked on a modelling project for simulating the transmission dynamics of HIV-1 among the fisher folk, sex workers and the general population in Uganda using an individual-based stochastic model.
