Bio
Roland Kalb was born in 1967 in Austria and is working in the field of technical ionic liquid application and manufacture since more than 20 years. In 2003 he invented an industrial process for the world’s first halide and waste free production of ultra-pure ionic liquids (CBILS®-process). He founded proionic GmbH in 2004. Today proionic GmbH produces ionic liquid volumes in the multi-ton scale, making it one of the three leading companies worldwide in development and manufacturing of ionic liquids. Roland Kalb holds a number of more than 50 international pending and 55 issued patents and is among the top inventors in the field of ionic liquids worldwide. Since 2016 he is an industrial advisory board member and since 2019 affiliate senior scientist at the DOE Joint BioEnergy Institute, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California. Several of his inventions are commercialized today, including the “ionic compressor” of Linde AG, the CBILS®-process licensed to BASF SE and “IL-B2001®”, an inherently safe high temperature cooling liquid for the metallurgical industry of Mettop GmbH.
Ionic liquids are molten organic salts with very low melting points. They are a new class of liquid high tech materials with extraordinary properties, among them nanostructural organisation. With about 9000 publications including 2000 patent applications only in 2019, the wide field of application of these materials develops towards a truly cross-sectional technology. Based on their unconventional properties Ionic liquids allow fundamentally new approaches to technical challanges: They have the potential to open doors to radical innovations.
