Bio
Dr. Motterlini has been working on the biological function of heme oxygenase and its product carbon monoxide (CO) for more than 30 years and published over 200 scientific articles including several reviews on this subject. He is internationally renowned in this field primarily for contributing to defining the role of the heme oxygenase system, CO and bilirubin in cardiovascular biology and inflammation. The breakthrough of his research came in 2002 when he pioneered the identification and characterisation of CO-releasing molecule (CO-RMs), compounds that carry and deliver small quantities of CO to cells and organisms. CO-RMs are now well established as the pharmacological actions elicited by these compounds recapitulate the effects produced by HO-1-derived CO. Indeed, similarly to CO gas, CO-RMs have been shown to exert vasodilation and hypotension, possess anti-inflammatory activities, protect ischemic tissue against oxidative damage, inhibit platelet aggregation and more recently modulate mitochondrial function and bioenergetics. Dr. Motterlini holds several patents on the CO-RMs technology and co-founded and was Scientific Director of the biopharmaceutical start-up company HemoCORM Ltd (2002-2008). He currently serves as a member of the Editorial Board of Pharmacological Research, Antioxidants and eLife.
