Bio
Bob Furness is Professor Emeritus of Seabird and Fishing Interactions, and currently works as Principal Ornithologist of MacArthur Green Ecological Consultancy, in Glasgow.
In addition to supervising 50 PhD students working on topics as diverse as pollutants in deep-sea fish, the ecology of Lyme disease, and long-line bycatch of albatrosses in Brazil, Bob has maintained a long term study of great skuas in Shetland for over 30 years. Bob was until recently a member of the Advisory Committee on Sites of Special Scientific Interest, and has been on the Council of the British Trust for Ornithology as well as a member of the BTO Ringing Committee, and chair of BTO Research Committee.
He also chaired the ICES Working Group on Seabird Ecology, and the IAPEME (a panel of experts appointed to overview monitoring programmes for marine wind farms in Denmark), and has been a member of MSC certification teams assessing the sustainability of several major fisheries, including the USA pollock fishery and the Alaskan halibut fishery.
Professor Furness is particularly proud of his small part in the production of the beautiful and informative “Birds of Argyll” published in December 2007, and of his achievement some years ago, with the help of his wife Sue, of ringing 1000 kittiwake chicks in a day at a colony in the Norwegian Arctic.
Professor Furness is a member of the Board of SNH; an appointed Chair of the SNH Scientific Advisory Committee; board member of the British Trust for Ornithology; and an honorary member of the German Ornithological Society. He serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals including Journal of Ornithology and Bird Study.
