Career Trajectory
Bio
After graduating in physics from the University of Oxford in 1981, I went into science journalism, working for various business publications and freelancing for The Economist and The Sunday Times. In 1987 I joined the staff of The Times as a specialist correspondent, moving to The Sunday Telegraph in 1990.
From the late 1980s onwards, I began a parallel career in academic research, becoming a Visiting Fellow in the Neural Computing Research Group of Aston University, Birmingham UK in 1992, then Visiting Reader. Since 2015 I have been a Visiting Professor in the Department of Mathematics.
My interests are wide-ranging, resulting in published research on statistical inference (particularly Bayesian methods), probability theory, decision theory, celestial mechanics, number theory, the history of medicine, and "everyday science" (my research into Murphy's Law led the award of the IgNobel Prize for physics in 1996).
In addition, I have written four books, most recently "Chancing It: the Laws of Chance and how they can work for you" (Profile Books 2016).
