个人简介
This research-intensive degree fostered Rob’s interest in parasitology and drug resistance, and led to an Honours project with Dr Rowena Martin in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the ANU. He was awarded the University Medal for his thesis, which examined interactions between the malaria parasite’s chloroquine (CQ) resistance transporter (PfCRT) and compounds that reverse CQ resistance. With the support of an Australian Postgraduate Award and an ANU Supplementary Scholarship, Rob continued to focus on drug resistance in malaria in his doctoral studies in the same lab, where he is currently finalising his PhD thesis. Rob’s research has resulted in eleven publications, including co-first author publications in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, ACS Chemical Biology and ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters in 2014, and a first-author review in Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences in 2012. His research has examined the different mutational pathways PfCRT can navigate to attain CQ transport activity, characterised CQ transport via a diverse range of PfCRT haplotypes, and investigated interactions between resistance-conferring forms of PfCRT and compounds which have the ability to select against drug-resistant parasites. The ASBMB Fellowship will enable Rob to present at the 26th Molecular Parasitism Conference held in Woods Hole, USA, in September 2015.
