RESEARCH INTERESTS
Physics and chemistry of inorganic glasses; spectroscopic characterization of glass structure; preparation and properties of novel glasses for sealing, optical and biomedical applications; characterization of material surfaces and interfaces.
Brow has published over 170 research papers on the properties, structures, and
applications of glasses, and has received eleven US patents for specialty glasses used in a
variety of packaging applications. He has received a number of awards and recognitions,
including the George W. Morey Award (2004) from the American Ceramic Society for
‘new and original work in glass science and technology’, the Gottardi Prize from the
International Commission on Glass (1996) for contributions to glass science by a young
researcher, and the PACE-Schwartzwalder award (1994) as the nation’s outstanding
young ceramic engineer. He delivered the Scholes Lecture in 2009 (Alfred University),
for ‘significant contributions to the field of glass science’, and the Cooper Lecture
(2010). He has received several teaching awards from Missouri S&T, and was named
‘Curators’ Professor’ in 2005, and received the Presidential Award for Research and
Creativity in 2010. Dr. Brow is a fellow of the American Ceramic Society (1997) and the
Society of Glass Technology (2005). He has served on the Board of Directors of ACerS
(2007-2009), and was named President-Elect of ACerS for 2011-12.
