Our research seeks to characterize deformation of the earth's crust through an integration of the techniques of microscopic and mesoscopic finite-strain analysis with regional structural geometry as determined by field mapping, seismic reflection profiling, and other geophysical techniques. Through this approach, we hope to define the kinematic evolution and tectonic setting of foreland contractional deformation such as thick- and thin-skinned thrust belts and intercontinental rift provinces. Our regional investigations have led us to seek a better understanding of the fractal nature of brittle fault populations and to explore the limits on the determination of intracontinental deformation rates using growth strata imaged on seismic reflection data.
